Prescott golf headed to State in search of fifth straight title

Marks of Ellsworth qualifies individually

Prescott’s girls golf team is making their return to the State Championship event this year, as the Cardinals prevailed at the Tomah Sectional. Ellsworth’s Lexi Marks qualified individually with a sixth-place finish individually in Luck.

Prescott is facing an obstacle not yet encountered during their reign, as the team was moved up to Division 1. Instead of looking back and remembering the Division 2 titles they stacked up, the golfers were only motivated more.

Prescott finished in first at Tomah Sectional, scoring a 323 with second being Hudson (339) and third being Tomah (341).

Prescott played at the Tomah course earlier in the year, which Head Coach Chad Salay said would give the team a big advantage going in.

Middle Border Conference Golfer of the Year Gabbi Matzek led the team with a finish in a tie for second at 79. Behind Matzek were Layla Salay and Jeanne Rohl in a tie for fourth at 81, Macy Reiter in a tie for eighth at 82 and Caroline Foy in a tie for 28th at 94.

Ellsworth narrowly missed out on a state appearance as a team, scoring a 382 to finish third of eight at the Luck Sectional in Division 2. The Panthers finished four strokes behind Hayward, who qualified in the second place slot.

Junior Lexi Marks did qualify as an individual, placing in a tie for sixth with a score of 89. Marks landed on the all-conference second team this year in the Middle Border Conference.

State takes place Oct. 14-15 in Madison with tickets available at https://www.wiaawi.org/Tickets.
