Prescott golf wins MBC, Matzek earns Player of the Year

SOMERSET — Prescott girls’ golf enters every event expecting to win, and they did just that in conference play, taking the top spot in all nine events to win the conference title.

“We had it pretty sealed up coming into today, so we knew as a team we were gonna do it,” Head Coach Chad Salay said. “There’s some individual things that we were really fighting for, so it was fun that most of them happened the way we wanted to.”

The awards were flowing for both Prescott and Ellsworth on Monday, with Gabbi Matzek of Prescott winning conference player of the year, Jeanne Rohl, Macy Reiter and Layla Salay of Prescott joining the all-conference first team, Lexi Marks of Ellsworth and Lydia Feran of Prescott making the second team and Aaliyah Huppert of Ellsworth, Kendra Ogilvie of Prescott and Caroline Foy of Prescott making the honorable mentions.

“Super deserving, battled all year,” Salay said of Matzek winning the player of the year honor. “Couldn’t be more proud.”

Matzek won three Middle Border events individually, and was just happy one of the Cardinals took home the player of the year honor.

“It was obviously going to come down between me and my teammates, and it’s hard because you want everyone to do good on your team, but it feels good,” Matzek said.

Salay said the conference events serve as a great way to honor individual play, but as the regionals kick in, all the focus is now on the team.

“We all played good this season and we’re excited for playoffs,” Matzek said. “Coming off of here on a high to go to regionals and then, hopefully, take it all the way to state.”

Prescott is locked in on what’s next, as the postseason is what they had their eye on the whole time.

“It’s kind of just like another piece to the puzzle,” Salay said. “We definitely want to win conference, it’s important to us, but we understand there’s bigger things beyond this.”

Salay said the team has already been preparing for their regional Oct. 2 in Eau Claire, where they will be joined by other Division 1 squads including River Falls. Prescott will be looking for a fifth consecutive state championship, but after making the jump to the top division, there are no shortage of challengers.

For Ellsworth, they had been trading places back-and-forth all season with St. Croix Central for the third spot in the conference, and came into the final event tied. It was St. Croix Central that took the spot in the final event, but Ellsworth’s season-long efforts were still rewarded with a top four spot in the conference.

Ellsworth heads to Hammond on Oct. 3 for their regional, looking to keep a strong season going.
