To the editor,

The Ellsworth Public Library gets by with a LOT of help from our Friends!

The Friends of Ellsworth Public Library had been supporting the library for many years before being granted nonprofit status in 2016, but becoming an official nonprofit organization expanded access to fundraising opportunities. Last year, the group brought in $61,663. These funds paid for some remaining renovation expenses, supported a sculpture installation at the library’s south entry, a virtual tour of the library on the library website, and cubbies and coat hooks in the RCU Children’s Area. They also provided financial support for the monthly library programs at the senior center and sponsorship of the library’s coffee station.

But money isn’t the only thing the Friends contribute—last year, several members dedicated their time supporting programs and fundraising events, like Community Trick or Treat, the Cheese Curd Festival, a perpetual booksale shelf at the library, and maintenance of Little Free Libraries in some of the rural parts of the library’s service area. In addition, the Friends have rallied as needed to advocate for adequate library funding and have provided assistance with grant writing for the library.

Oct. 20-26, 2024 is the 19th annual National Friends of Libraries Week, and it’s the perfect opportunity for the staff and trustees of the Ellsworth Public Library to give our Friends a big shout out for all they do to make a positive impact on us every single day.

We know the Friends are always looking for new members and volunteers. They have so much fun while working to make our community better. Joining is just a click away—visit friendsofepl.org and click “Get Involved” for membership information.

Joining the Friends of the Library is a terrific way to make new friends of your own, give back to our community, and make the library even better.
