PRESCOTT — Prescott was chomping at the bit all week to take the field for their home opener, and it showed with a 44-point first quarter leading the way for a dominant 65-16 win over Durand-Arkansaw.

Barrett Temmers kicked off the game with a 34-yard touchdown run which was quickly followed by a fumble that was picked up and scored by Cole Platson. A 10-yard pass to the corner of the endzone led to a spectacular leaping grab by Kobe Russell for the team’s third score.

The Cardinals kept managing quick stops and breaking off big plays in a hurry on the other side of the field, which led to one of the highest scoring quarters the fans will ever witness.

After the 44-0 first, the scoring slowed down for the Cardinals, which was largely due to them running out the clock the best they could.

It was not just one player or phase of the game getting it done for Prescott in the first, as there were long rushing touchdowns, passing scores, a defensive score and even a blocked punt. It was an all-around quarter of perfection, and there was no coming back for Durand-Arkansaw.

For Prescott Head Coach Jordan Hansen, it is about offense, defense and special teams all performing well and all complementing each other.

“If you’re not good at one of those one night, you need the other two to pick ‘em up,” Hansen said. “And if you struggle on two of them, then the other team’s got a great chance of winning the game.”

Quarterback Teddy Bernick may have only attempted six passes, but he certainly made them count. Bernick completed three of those passes, each going for a touchdown, and totaled 117 yards.

The ground game saw contributions from a large chunk of the roster, with Ethan West scoring a pair, Temmers scoring one, Wyatt Budworth scoring one and Andrew Lesso scoring one.

Hansen rotated a lot of players into the game, which provided both a way to see some of the roster’s talent as well as keep some players fresh.

“We executed but then we stayed healthy as well,” Hansen said. “As we go through the Middle Border schedule, it’s going to be tough each week, and we’re going to have to be healthy if we want to make a run at that thing.”

Eight players recorded a carry during the game and all three pass completions were caught by different players.

The win meant even more for Hansen because it had been since the opening week of the previous season that Prescott had brought in a win at home.

“We just try to lock in each and every week,” Hansen said. “We take pride in playing football at Laney Field.”

The pride was on full display during the home opener, with an absolute statement win in front of their crowd.

Prescott moves to 2-0 on the season after taking down Northwestern 42-8 in the season opener. Prescott will hit the road again, taking on Altoona on Friday to open conference play.
