Introducing DarkSky Wisconsin, WI’s DarkSky International Chapter

Posted

A new chapter of DarkSky International has been established in Wisconsin. The new chapter, DarkSky Wisconsin, aims to unite communities across the state in efforts to protect the natural night environment, promote responsible outdoor lighting, and raise awareness about the negative impacts of light pollution on wildlife, human health, and the environment.

The launch of DarkSky Wisconsin marks a significant step forward in the fight against light pollution in the Midwest. This chapter will work closely with local governments, businesses, and residents to implement sustainable lighting practices, advocate for dark sky-friendly policies, and provide educational resources to help Wisconsinites appreciate and protect the night sky.

Light pollution is caused by lighting that is unshielded, misaimed, excessive in number, and left on throughout the night. Bright white LED lighting is also a large contributing cause of light pollution. Sources of excessive lighting include building exteriors and interiors, advertising billboards, commercial properties and buildings, streetlights, and illuminated sports venues. Excessive residential lighting is also an increasing problem, with exterior lights often exceeding what is necessary for personal safety.

Light pollution has been recognized as a growing environmental concern, disrupting ecosystems, impacting human circadian rhythms, and obscuring our view of the stars. Through the efforts of DarkSky Wisconsin, residents and visitors alike will have the opportunity to experience the wonder of a natural night sky while contributing to the preservation of this valuable resource.
