Faith, family and farming: Udder Hills Meats

MAIDEN ROCK — Small meat stores, butchers and processors are a popular stop in western Wisconsin, and Pierce County is no different.

Udder Hills Meats of Maiden Rock is a family farm-owned meat store that gives the public an option of meat that comes fresh from a farm. Udder Hills Meats has a simple process for how they operate: if they don’t raise it, they don’t sell it.

“I think it’s huge,” John Hinrichs said. “We don’t price our meat like the value should be placed. What we want to offer is a farm-fresh product that’s frozen at a price that everybody can afford. Obviously we can’t feed everybody, but we can feed the people who really care what they eat.”

They place an importance on knowing where the meat comes from, and how it was raised. In addition, they grow the crops that feed their animals, making the whole process controlled from within.

“We have a special diet and a way we treat the animals humanely,” Hinrichs said.

Udder Hills goes by the mottos “Faith, Family, and Farming” and “If you care what you eat, we have your meat.”

Both the farm and store are run by the family, and it has become a way for them to bond over the years.

Hinrichs has farmed all his life, farming west of Red Wing before moving to Maiden Rock in 1995. They initially were solely a dairy farm, but as time passed they diversified. In 2022, they sold the dairy portion of their farm to focus on meat.

Now, Udder Hills Meats offers around 200 different items, with beef, pork, chicken, lamb and turkey options all available. In addition to the variety of individual items, they offer quarter, half and whole animals.

The family originally sold meat out of freezers in their garage, but the overwhelming support caused a need for expansion. Almost three years ago, they decided to build a building that would allow for more storage and ended up deciding to tack on a storefront for the public to stop by.

“Let’s just put another 20 feet on the front and if they come they come for storefront,” Hinrichs said. “We’ve just been growing ever since.”

Hinrichs said while many of the items may seem daunting to cook, he has found enjoyment in making cooking videos for the Facebook account that show how they can be made. He said this serves as both a way to spotlight individual products as well as educate people wo may not know how they are prepared.

The store, located at W4252 330th Ave. in Maiden Rock, is open Wednesdays from 9-5, 9-6 on Fridays, 9-4 on Saturdays and 1-4 Sundays. They also have an in-store loyalty program available. Udder Hills can also be found at the Hastings Farmers Market on Tuesdays, Cottage Grove on Thursdays and Hudson on Saturdays.

The family’s website showcases many of the options available and can be found at https://www.udderhillsmeats.com/.
